Gleichmann and BMZ – a powerfull Partnership!

When Gleichmann signed the distribution contract with the German Batterie Montage Zentrum (BMZ) in April 2000, the Karlstein factory employed 55 people - a manufacture under several ownerships.

Meanwhile BMZ changed to having 238 employees, offering specialist service for intelligent solutions in customized battery packs and chargers. All this at the manufacturing location in Germany. Expanding aggressively internationally, recently establishing its own production plant in China with over 2.000 m2 manufacturing area. BMZ now ranks internationally as the first choice for Design, construction and manufacturing of battery systems, including safety and intelligent circuits plus customized housings. Such achievements are as much a result of the intensive co-operation over many years between our sales and marketing engineers, as is the highly quali. ed technical designers, technicians and production staff of BMZ.
From the first discussion at the customer to understand the technical and commercial requirements, providing product requirement specifications, through to sample and pilot build manufacturing, whilst always working together to achieve the optimum solution.

It is essential that designs meet requirements such CE/UN/and ULtests and will be arranged by BMZ. The result of this close co-operation is reflected by dozens of successful joint projects from the markets including medical technology, mobile communications, leisure, and Power tools plus more.

Crucially, adaptation to market and customer needs is essential to continued success. Whilst BMZ and Gleichmann naturally offer technologies of nickel metal hydride, nickel cadmium and lead acid from the portfolio, the demand is clearly tending towards lithium-ion, to high current capacity lithium manganese and lithium polymer batteries.
As in previous years BMZ and Gleichmann cordially invite you for international specialist developer forum on the 28th of September 2006 to inform regarding the current developments of the market. The individual topics and all important information please take from the attached program on page 7. Use this chance to get first hand information for this Top Event. We look forward to welcoming you to our meeting at the BMZ facilities in Karlstein (in the proximity of Frankfurt/Main).

New record breaking USB2.0 host controller

The new Universal Serial Bus (USB) host controller compliant with USB 2.0 speci. cations features the industry’s fastest data transmission rates and lowest power consumption levels. The µPD720102 host controller is the second product in NEC Electronics’ successful ECOUSB™ series of devices that comply with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) environmental directive.

Super fast operation with no compromise

New buffer memory and circuits optimized for system memory access reduce the gap between packets of data and enable the ìPD720102 host controller to transmit data at speeds approaching 33 MBytes/s, almost 2 GBytes per minute – up to 30% faster than the current industry-leading host controller. This highspeed transmission rate would make it possible to transfer approximately 500 MP3-compressed songs per minute, and could also facilitate the development of next-generation multimedia systems with larger storage capacities and greater performance features that benefit from high-speed interfaces. The record-breaking data transmission rate represents a nearly 50% improvement in transmission rate over NEC Electronics’ previous-generation host controller, the µPD720101.

nec3_usb

Super low power and optimisation at no extra cost

Optimized internal clock signals and an on-chip 1.5 V voltage regulator enable extremely low power consumption levels, as low as 65 mA during data transmission and a mere 100 µA during idle time. These power consumption rates in both active and idle modes are the lowest in the industry and more than 50% improvement over the µPD720101 device.
To optimise cost the number of ports in NEC Electronics’ latest ECOUSB™ device has been reduced to three, compared to the previous 5-port design. The new µPD720102 host controller is available in a compact package and offers superb and costeffective performance due to an integrated 1.5 V internal voltage regulator for core logic and several on-chip termination resistors.
The implementation of these components reduces the total bill of material by approximately 30% and facilitates lowcost system development, ideal for many industrial and digital consumer applications.
The µPD720102 host controller is easy to use in new system development because of its compliance with the Enhanced Host Controller Interface (EHCI) Rev 1.0 and Open Host Controller Interface (OHCI) Rev 1.0a specifications, which allows developers to introduce USB interface products quickly based on popular operating systems and device drivers already available in the market.

Key applications

  • Industrial Human Machine Interface

ISSP1-Compact: Expansion of Structured ASIC solutions

NEC Electronics’ ISSP Instant Silicon Solution Platform) technology is a meanwhile well-established class of Structured ASIC devices based on a costeffective, high-function, easy-to-design architecture. Ideal for the modern demands of fast development turnaround, ISSP provides a risk management solution that combines very quick time to market with reduced totalcost.

The ISSP1-Compact is a new product that inherits the structure, performance, and functions of the 150nm ISSP1 - STD series as is, while at the same time reducing the package size signi. cantly. The ISSP1-Compact employs Finepitch BGA (FPBGA) and Plastic BGA (PBGA) packages, providing a lineup that offers smaller size and light - weight mounting.

In addition to the already very low non-recurring engineering (NRE) cost that is available for ISSP1 - STD, making use of smaller packages allows the further reduction of unit prices for ISSP1-Compact.

Why does the automotive industry need AUTOSAR?

The AUTOSAR partnership was set up with the objective of de. ning an open standard for an automotive E/E (electrical/ electronic) architecture. Reason for the standard is that the automotive industry needs to address several major issues:

  • Managing the growing complexity of automotive E/E systems
  • Flexibility for product modification, upgrade and update
  • Scalability of solutions within and across product lines
  • Quality and reliability of E/E systems

The basic concept underlying this architecture is that the abstraction of the hardware will be done in layers. Where the API and functionality of each layer is de. ned but the implementation is open. In addition to the layered architecture the AUTOSAR standard contains a very flexible configuration concept. It will be possible to adapt each driver to the different application needs.

nec3_autos_mini

Impact on E/E architectures

Introducing AUTOSAR is likely to lead to software and runtime overhead. Normally this would lead to an increase in system cost. One solution to that problem could be to alter the vehicle E/E architecture, by moving away from the current one-ECU-one function approach to a more . exible approach where several functions are bundled in one ECU. Changing to this style of E/E architecture would save a lot of overhead cost such as housing or PCB (see . gure at the bottom of the page). Introducing AUTOSAR software will ease software integration work signi. cantly. In that sense the success of the AUTOSAR standardization could be a decisive factor for further growth in vehicle software functionality.

Changing the user interface

When AUTOSAR is introduced and a new microcontroller is to be applied the developers will no longer use traditional user manuals that explain a number of registers and physical signals; instead they will use the AUTOSAR con. guration tool to con. gure standard drivers. In consequence, the microcontroller vendor will no longer be selling a ‘chip + user manual‚ but a ‘chip + software + con. guration set’

Challenges for microcontroller vendors

Since the software interface is the same for all microcontrollers how can the microcontroller vendors differentiate their products? Traditional factors like:

  •  Price
  •  Quality
  •  Current
nec3_autosar

consumption will continue to play a major role. But from a software and functional perspective the product from vendor A will look the same as the product from vendor B. One possibility to differentiate the product is to have an implementation of the software API that i s better than the competition. Important here is to . nd a product with the best balance among performance, cost and . exibility. This means that the microcontroller vendors will have to acquire an extra level of competence and shift the focus from hardware to a more system-oriented view.

What action is NEC Electronics taking on AUTOSAR?

NEC Electronics joined the AUTOSAR partnership as premium member in March 2004. NEC Electronicsf main area of expertise is microcontrollers and the main focus inside the AUTOSAR partnership is on the software modules that are very close to or directly interacting with the microcontroller hardware. NEC Electronics employees are currently members in the following workgroups:

  •  SPAL (special peripheral abstraction layers) (active)
  •  Memory management (active)
  •  Con. guration (active)
  •  FlexRay
  •  CAN/LIN
  •  Mode management
  •  Gateways
  •  Operating system

Internally NEC is working on bringing AUTOSAR standards and methodology to bear on the product development process. With a clear goal in view: NEC Electronics intends to provide system solutions that support and enhance the implementation of AUTOSARcompatible software.

Go fast. Stay cool.

Ultra-low power, high performance 16-bit microcontrollers. At the Embedded World Conference in February 2006, NEC Electronics introduced a new line of 16-bit microcontrollers based on the new 78K0R CPU. This new range of 78K0R based microcontrollers delivers one of the highest power/performance ratios available for 16-bit microcontrollers.

78K0R microcontrollers are ideal for battery operated applications such as blood glucose and blood pressure monitors, gas and water meters, and fire and security products. In addition existing 8-bit users can benefit from turbocharging’ applications such as single phase electricity meters, thermostats/ heating controls, sensors and detectors, and small appliances. Designers using 8-bit microcontrollers are facing ever increasing demands to integrate more and more features into even the most basic products. Power consumption budgets are tighter than ever and marketing teams are forever demanding lower costs.

As a consequence designers are often required to choose between performance and power consumption. The result is either a product that has a shorter battery life or a compromised feature set. Because of the optimised power/performance ratio of 78K0R microcontrollers, designers no longer have to compromise on feature sets or battery life.
78K0R based microcontrollers deliver 13 Dhrystone MIPS at 20 MHz (0.65 DMIPS/MHz) while only consuming 0.4 mA/MHz in fully operational mode.
Designers can also run the device on an internal oscillator at up to 8 MHz, or in standby mode using the 32 KHz low speed oscillator. By using these additional modes, power consumption can be even further reduced.

nec3_fast_cool

Designers no longer have to compromise

nec3_780series_lineup

The 78K0R 16-bit CPU executes many of its 71 instructions in a single cycle including popular 16-bit arithmetic, data transfer, logical operations, and compound instructions such as ‘exchange’, ‘compare’, and ‘skip’.
Enhanced program control operations are also available such as 16-bit relative and immediate addressing enabling faster program execution for larger program loops. Because of these features designers can achieve 5 times higher performance than the 78K0 8-bit CPU.

Migrating from 78K0 8-bit based microcontrollers has also been made simple due to the high proportion of shared instructions between 78K0 and 78K0R. 53 out of the 60 instructions available for the 78K0 CPU are also available for the 78K0R.

The remaining 7 instructions have been enhanced for the 78K0R and an additional 11 instructions added. For enhanced and new instructions programmers only need re-compile their 78K0 code for the 78K0R platform and the compiler will re-optimise to use these new instructions. Common development tools are also available that stretch across NEC’s now wide range of microcontrollers.

78K0R is supported by the MINICUBE range of on-chip debug tools, which is the same range of tools supporting the 78K0 8-bit and V850 32-bit products. MINICUBE enables debug capability using on-chip debug facilities integrated with 78K0R microcontrollers. It represents a low cost tool environment for development of less complex applications. All 78K0R microcontrollers include on-chip debug features that allow application issues to be diagnosed even in the field.

For more complex applications the IECUBE emulator offers full emulation and trace capabilities, real time debug functions, ROM and RAM monitoring, and MCU resource analysis. The IECUBE platform also supports 78K0 8-bit and V850 32-bit microcontrollers. For software development 78K0R is supported by the IAR Embedded Workbench class leading tools. 30 devices based on the 78K0R CPU will be available in the 78K0R/ Kx3 series during 2006.

Samples will be made generally available from August 2006. Earlier availability is possible on application.

Solutions for Industrial Automation

Gleichmann Electronics has built on the Industrial Automation Initiative from NEC Electronics Europe. Our objective is to get deeper knowledge of industrial automation products and also the needs for components and assemblies that are required.

The kickoff for the initiative was the launch of the NECs ERTEC devices at Gleichmann. ERTEC is a ARM9 based high-speed Ethernet- Controller that supports Profinet (IRT). Profinet (IRT) is a new standard in the market. To help our customers to start with Profinet IRT and ERTEC, we arranged together with TMG, WIND RIVER and NEC a series of courses. More seminars are planed in the future.

To gain in depth knowledge about new technologies and trends we are working together with selected knowhow partners, for example TMG, as well as with our customers. The diversity of the Gleichmann product portfolio, including NEC Electronics (shown below) offers customers the option to buy solutions ranging from a single component to a complete system.

A good example for this is a system in industrial automation control. In this system, the ERTEC chip is used for Profinet communication plus a 32-bit NEC microcontroller is used for other communication and application items. Gleichmann are also able to supply memories, LEDs, and connectors. In parallel to the industrial automation initiative, Gleichmann will offer similar services to customers in other markets. We are launching three more initiatives, Medical, Motor Control and Building Management.
